Garden Design and Makeovers

When a garden needs more than one fix, we plan it as a whole and build it in one go.

A garden makeover starts with how you want to use the space: somewhere to sit out, room for children to play, less upkeep, or all three. We talk it through on site, sketch where the patio, paths, beds and lawn will go, and then build it in a sensible order, starting with the clearing and groundwork and finishing with the turf.

One back garden on our Instagram took about three weeks from start to finish. The old lawn and slabs came up, brick edging went in for a new patio and step, a curved gravel path was laid with edging through fresh soil beds, and riven slabs went down outside the back door. Another has buff walling raised beds stepping down beside the patio, with a new lawn and closeboard fencing around it.

What we do

  • Planning the layout with you on site
  • Clearing the old garden
  • Patios, steps and paths
  • Raised beds and brick edging
  • New lawns, gravel and fencing to finish

Good to know

  • We build in a sensible order, so each stage sits on the one before
  • A full back garden can take a few weeks; smaller changes take days
  • You can do one stage now and the rest later

Patios and Paving

A patio is the part of the garden you use most, so it has to be level, firm and good to look at.

We dig out, lay a firm base, then bed, level and joint each slab. Finishing touches make the difference: a contrasting block border, a patio set level with the lawn so the mower runs straight over the edge, or black jointing to bring out the colours in natural stone.

Recent patios include rainbow Indian sandstone with black joints, grey riven slabs at 600 x 600 laid level with the lawn in front of a conservatory, and a grey patio with a charcoal block border set into a lawn in front of a new feather edge fence.

What we do

  • Natural Indian sandstone, including rainbow
  • Riven slabs in grey and buff
  • Contrasting block borders
  • Steps and raised edges
  • Old patios lifted and relaid

Good to know

  • We’ll show you slab colours and sizes before you choose
  • Patios can be set level with the lawn for easy mowing
  • Jointing colour changes the look: ask to see examples

Driveways and Flagging

A driveway takes the weight of a car every day, so the work underneath matters as much as the finish.

We lay block paving driveways, like the red and brindle herringbone drive in our photos, with its brick gate piers, as well as flagged drives and paths. Herringbone is a strong pattern for drives because the blocks lock together.

Not every driveway needs replacing. Where flags have sunk or rock underfoot, we can lift them, put the ground right and lay them back level. Our Google review is from a customer whose driveway flags we re-levelled.

What we do

  • Block paving driveways
  • Flagged driveways and paths
  • Sunken or rocking flags re-levelled
  • Edging along drives and paths

Good to know

  • Herringbone suits drives that carry cars
  • Re-levelling can save replacing a sound driveway
  • We’ll look at the drive before we quote

Fencing

Good fencing gives you privacy and a clean edge to the whole garden.

We put up closeboard and feather edge fencing, and fence panels between concrete posts and gravel boards, which keep the timber off the wet ground. Many of our garden jobs finish with new fencing so the boundary matches the new patio and lawn.

If only part of a fence has gone, we can replace the broken panels and posts and leave the rest. If the whole run is tired, we take the old fence down and away before the new one goes up.

What we do

  • Closeboard and feather edge fencing
  • Fence panels on concrete posts
  • Gravel boards
  • Old fencing taken down and removed
  • Single panels and posts replaced

Good to know

  • Concrete posts and gravel boards keep timber off the ground
  • Ask about fencing when you plan a patio or lawn: it’s easier together

Turfing and Artificial Grass

A new lawn is only as good as the ground under it, so most of the work happens before the turf arrives.

We strip the old lawn, dig out what needs to go, level the ground and lay fresh turf, butting the rolls up tight so the lawn knits together. Our photos show a worn lawn stripped and returfed, and new turf laid either side of a new slab pathway.

Artificial grass is an option if you would rather not mow. We clear and level the ground first, as for turf, so it lies flat and drains, and it can be finished against a patio edge or new fencing.

What we do

  • Old lawns stripped
  • Ground dug out and levelled
  • New turf laid
  • Artificial grass laid
  • Lawns finished against patios and paths

Good to know

  • New turf needs regular watering for the first few weeks
  • Levelling first is what keeps a lawn flat
  • Artificial grass suits a garden you’d rather not mow

Gravel and Low Maintenance Gardens

If the lawn has become a chore, gravel gives you a tidy garden all year with very little upkeep.

One customer asked us for a low maintenance garden. We dug out the tired grass, levelled the ground and laid fresh gravel up to a timber edge, so the whole space stays neat with very little upkeep.

Gravel also makes a good path. In one back garden remodel we laid a curved gravel path with edging through new soil beds, and in another the old grass and flags came up for fresh gravel and rainbow Indian sandstone.

What we do

  • Grass dug out and the ground levelled
  • Fresh gravel laid
  • Gravel paths with edging
  • Gravel combined with paving

Good to know

  • Edging keeps gravel where it belongs
  • Gravel and paving together suit small gardens

Garden Clearance, Paths and Shed Bases

Some jobs start with a garden you can barely get into. We clear it, level it and get it ready for what comes next.

We clear overgrown gardens, take out old slabs and broken fencing, and level the ground, whether you want a patio, a lawn or a base for something else. One recent back garden went from long weeds and broken slabs to a new patio, artificial grass and fresh fence panels.

We also lay slab paths and build shed bases, like the one we built alongside a new patio, lawn and pathway in one back garden. Smaller clearance jobs often take just a day or two.

What we do

  • Overgrown gardens cleared
  • Old slabs and fencing removed
  • Ground levelled
  • Slab paths
  • Shed bases

Good to know

  • Clearance is often the first stage of a bigger job
  • We can clear the ground now and build on it later
